Frech und frei und einfach cool: Bei PENNY WAS RIGHT wird zwar im Großen und Ganzen nach Scheme F gearbeitet und mit den üblichen Punk-Rock-Zutaten die schnoddrige Suppe gesalzen, doch die Band hat spürbar Spaß an der Sache und mit Frontdame Dalia auch eine Sängerin in ihren Reihen, die den manchmal etwas gebügelten Sound mit ihrer rotzigen Stimme sofort wieder Richtung Garage schiebt…

…Un quintette qui délivre 11 tracks, énergiques, clean, imparables dans un style qui a déjà fait ses preuves (cf. Green Day et consorts). Un parfait album de punk rock, qui respecte les codes du genre, il contient même sa chanson ska «Hangover gang bang». Comme disait Lao Tseu : «Pas besoin de révolutionner la musique pour en faire de la bonne», et Penny Was Right l’a bien compris, c’est classique et c’est vachement bien foutu. Sinon, on me dit dans l’oreillette que le groupe étant fan de skate, et Penny étant l’autre nom du mini skate plastique, on a peut-être une piste sur l’origine du nom. Ceci étant, cela n’interfère en rien dans la qualité de cette galette, 100 % vitamine.

…Musicalement, Penny Was Right fait penser à Rise Against. Ils jouent vite, fort et bien, mais avec un jeu de guitare basse parmi les plus techniques et les plus cools qu’il m’ait été donné d’entendre depuis l’âge d’or du skate punk des années 90. En réalité, je n’ai découvert ce groupe prometteur qu’il y a quelques semaines au gré de mes recherches sur Internet, mais ce qui est certain, c’est que Clément – le bassiste – a une technique hors du commun et peut aisément être reconnu comme l’un des meilleurs bassistes de l’histoire du punk rock…

…The album opens on the newest single from the album, “Animal Behaviour”. It’s got a nice, upbeat opening with the dual guitar strumming of Julian and Cara. The punk element shines through especially strong in this track, where the most stand-out parts are Dalia Al-Shahawi’s strong, punchy vocals during the chorus, and the guitar solo that ends the track. This was a very strong opening to the album…

…Musically, PWR resembles early Rise Against. They’re fast and loud, but with some of the coolest, most intricate bass playing I have heard in years. Seriously. I don’t know who this guy is but he might be one of the best punk rock bass players I have ever seen. If you don’t believe me, listen to the outro of “Animal Behavior” and “Memories” (the latter sounds a ton like “April 29, 1992” by Sublime) or the intro to “Darkside of Humanity” for some examples. This jamming, wild, sometimes funky bass is the backbone of some seriously angsty skate punk, leaning at certain points into an almost hardcore territory…6/10
